The new 1500 paper claim form (version 02/12), which
replaces the current CMS-1500 paper claim form (version 08/05), will
be required by payers on claims received on and after April 1,
2014. Claims sent electronically to ECP to be printed and
submitted by ECP (payer code "PAPER") will indeed meet this
requirement and be submitted in the new form in accordance to
this April 1 transition. If you are currently submitting paper
claims through ECP, the requisite data translations will already be
accounted for.
ECP reminds providers that this same requirement
applies to claims
that may be printed and submitted directly from
provider offices, so
providers are reminded to contact their practice
management software
support regarding in-office printing readiness.
The change in form was primarily done to accommodate
and implement
future use of ICD-10 diagnosis codes (for dates of
service of 10/1/14 or after), although the form does include other
changes as well.
