ECP Update: February 2014

Description: Description: Description: http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/1101093164665/news_healthcare_hdr1.jpg

The following update from ECP is in keeping with our intention to be your source of timely industry news and updates to help keep you informed on matters that pertain to the healthcare industy, available services and ECP.

How to prove you are in PECOS to

avoid new ordering, referring denials

Your practice's claims will be denied when the ordering or referring provider information on the claim is either missing or not valid.  This was an error that previously allowed you an informational warning. The change took effect Jan. 6 and, in some instances, clearinghouses and vendors are erroneously holding up claims because they are unable to locate a provider in CMS' Provider Enrollment, Chain Ownership System (PECOS), when the provider is actually in PECOS, according to Jennifer Searfoss, consultant with Searfoss & Associates in Annapolis, Md.

The services that require valid ordering and referring information are claims for home health services, ordered clinical laboratory tests, imaging procedures and durable medical equipment

If these denials affect your practice, Searfross suggests:  You can print the page from CMS' ordering and referring file that has the provider information and fax or email to any vendor or clearinghouse questioning the provider's ability to order or refer services.  (part B news.  January 20, 2014 | Vol. 28, Issue 3).
