$1.2 Billion in Grants Are Available to Help Hospitals and Doctors Transition to Electronic Health Records (EHR)
Vice President Joe Biden announced on August 28, 2009 the availability of grants worth nearly $1.2 billion to help hospitals and health care providers implement and use electronic health records. The government is incentivizing hospitals and health care providers to switch over to EHR to increase safety, efficiency, savings, and overall patient health.
The grants made available today include $598 million worth of grants to establish approximately 70 Health Information Technology Regional Extension Centers. These centers will provide hospitals and clinicians with hands-on technical assistance in the selection, acquisition, implementation, and meaningful use of certified EHR systems. Another $564 million worth of grants are for States and Qualified State Designated Entities (SDEs) to support the development of mechanisms for information sharing within an emerging nationwide system of networks.
TCI believes it will take a tremendous commitment from the Federal Government to make EHR financially viable for the majority of medical practices. Once practices have EHR in place, TCI and companies like ours can close the loop by connecting EHRs to our practice management system, allowing for a seamless and paperless billing process.
